Cananga oil is produced by steam distillation of the flowers of C. odorata (DC) Hook. f. etThomson ssp. macrophylla. The yield, based on the weight of the flowers, is about 1%: The oil is a light to dark yellow liquid with a characteristic, floral, slightly woody odor. d2020 0.906–0.923; n20D 1.4950–1.5050; α20D 30 ° to 15 °; solubility: 1 vol in not more than 1 vol of 95% ethanol at 20 °C; acid number: max. 2; ester number: 13–35. The qualitative composition of cananga oil resembles that of ylang-ylang III oil but is distinguished by its higher caryophyllene (30–40%) content. |
